Today we’re delighted to reveal the cover for Best Believe: The Tres Hermanas, a Sisterhood for the Common Good by NoNieqa Ramos, illustrated by Nicole Medina! The book was designed by Kimberly Morales under the creative direction of Danielle Carnito. The title’s associate publisher was Carol Hinz, with special thanks to Elba Cabrera. Meet the Tres Hermanas: Evelina Antonetty, Lillian López, and Elba Cabrera. They moved from Puerto Rico to New York City as children and grew up to become leaders in their Bronx community. Evelina, an activist for social causes, founded United Bronx Parents. Lillian became a librarian and administrator who fought for Spanish and bilingual books and Spanish-speaking library staff. Elba worked closely with Evelina and became an ambassador and advocate for the arts.

NoNieqa Ramos is proud of having grown up in the Bronx, where they received the love and guidance of strong Boricuas—especially their tías. They did not learn about the Tres Hermanas until they were an adult, and they wrote this book to make sure every kid has a chance to read about their revolutionary lives. While researching this book, NoNieqa met Elba Cabrera, and they treasure every moment of listening to her memories. Nicole Medina is a proud, first-generation Latina American. The daughter and granddaughter of seamstresses, she grew up surrounded by patterns on textiles, which she now incorporates into her own work. Illustrating Best Believe, her debut picture book, gave Nicole the chance to connect with the incredible and important history of Latinas in the US.
