I will never forget the first time I heard the words, “Go back where you came from!” Words laced with venom and the not so hidden message, you look different, you don’t belong here.
The Covid-19 pandemic brought a wave of sickness but also a wave of anti-Asian hate. The words once flung at me as a child were splashed all over the news.
My hope with Love Grows Here is that one less kid has to hear, “Go back where you came from.” The words we wield hold power. They can incite hate or spread love, cause harm or create hope. Words can leave a scar or heal a heart. How will you use yours? — Chloe Ito Ward

Chloe Ito Ward is a former curriculum director and teacher. She spent the last decade teaching kindergarten where she discovered her passion for picture books. Chloe’s debut picture book Love Grows Here releases spring 2024 with Albert Whitman & Company. When Chloe isn’t perfecting her ramen recipe, you can find her rock climbing or dancing in the kitchen with her husband, son, and their imaginary dog Miso.
Violet Kim is a freelance illustrator whose work focuses on the picture book industry. Violet attended the Rhode Island School of Design, and received a BFA degree with a specialization in Illustration. She is also illustrator of Earth Day, Birthday! (2012), The Little Gray Bunny (2013), and If You’re Going To A March (2018).
