WNDB established the Educators Making a Difference Grants to support educators who believe in the power of diverse books by diverse authors.
General Information
Each Educators Making a Difference grant will provide up to $2000 per recipient and can be used toward buying diverse titles, hosting diversity-focused student or community events, diversity audits of existing collections, or any other project that supports diverse literature.

Eligibility
- Applicant must be a teacher, librarian, or other educator, employed in a student-facing role where they work with students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Applicants should be employed at least part-time at a school, library, or educational organization. Substitutes are not currently eligible.
- This is a United States-based grant so the applicant must be an educator at a US-based school or organization.
- Applicant must plan to use grant funds to integrate diverse literature in their classroom, through diversity audits of an existing collection, hosting diversity-focused student or community events, book purchases, author visits, activities, book clubs, school-wide reads, and other projects that support diverse literature. Applicant must provide a list of diverse titles if they plan to purchase books with grant funds.
- Applicant must be at least 18 years of age.

- A brief statement explaining how the applicant intends to use the grant money to further diversity teaching in their classroom. (max 500 words)
- A brief statement describing the community that your school serves. What impact would your proposed project have? (max 200 words)
- Applicant must provide a list of diverse titles if they plan to purchase books with grant funds.
- Project Budget: Please offer a general overview for how you would use the $2000. Here is a sample:

- Under Executive Order 13224, all 501(c)(3) organizations must confirm that grant recipients are not affiliated with federally identified terrorist groups. To comply, if you are awarded a grant, we must compile any of your former legal names that have been registered with the United States government. We are aware that we are asking for potentially sensitive information and we sincerely apologize for this intrusion. WNDB will keep this information in the utmost confidence and will never use any former name(s) in our correspondence with you.

Educators Making a Difference Grants FAQ

Both full- and part-time educators in a student-facing role may apply for this grant.
You are eligible to apply if you have legal residence in the United States regardless of citizenship.
You are eligible to apply if you are an educator in a US-based school or organization.
If you are purchasing books as part of your plan, you must include a list of books (title and author) that you will purchase. Books must have a diverse* protagonist and author as identified by WNDB's Definition of Diversity: We recognize all diverse experiences, including (but not limited to) LGBTQIA, Native, people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities, and ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities. We subscribe to a broad definition of disability, which includes but is not limited to physical, sensory, cognitive, intellectual, or developmental disabilities, chronic conditions, and mental illnesses (this may also include addiction). Furthermore, we subscribe to a social model of disability, which presents disability as created by barriers in the social environment, due to lack of equal access, stereotyping, and other forms of marginalization.
Yes, you can apply for the Educators Making a Difference Grants with the intention of performing a diversity audit on an existing collection of books in your school, library, or organization.
We aim to respond to applicants who are awarded a grant between 30-45 days upon receipt of your application.
There is no application fee to apply for the Educators Making a Difference Grant.
No, applicants can only apply for themselves to receive the grant.
Yes, applicants may apply to both grants simultaneously.
The Educators Making a Difference Grant provides up to $2000 in funding to recipients and can be used toward purchasing diverse titles, planning events focused on diverse literature, performing diversity audits, and more. Applicants must be US-based educators employed at least part-time in a student-facing role. Grant money is given directly to the applicant or their employer.
The Books Saves Lives Grant provides up to $10,000 in funding for school libraries to purchase diverse titles. Applicants may be educators, parents, and community members. WNDB will purchase books based on the winning school's preferences and will ship them directly to the school.
Yes, previous recipients of our grants and other funding are eligible.
We can’t advise you on the taxability of your grant, so we encourage you to consult a qualified tax preparation professional.
We will send the money via check made out to the applicant or direct deposit.

Grant funds must be used by December 31, 2022.
Grantees must respond to two surveys following allocation of funds, to report on how funds were used, and to provide photos, testimonials, and data on number / demographics of students served.
