at the Library of Congress

We Need Diverse Books is pleased to co-host a symposium with the Library of Congress on Diversity in Children’s Literature, followed immediately by The Walter Dean Myers Awards Ceremony, on Friday, March 16, 2018, held in the James Madison Memorial Building of the Library of Congress.
The symposium, titled “Seen and Heard: The Power of Books,” will be moderated by Newbery Medalist and bestselling author Linda Sue Park. Panelists will include past Walter winners and honorees, as well as the to-be-determined 2018 Walter Honorees. The Symposium will be open to the public, and live streamed by the Library.
National Book Award winner Jacqueline Woodson will serve as the Awards Ceremony’s Emcee and Guest Speaker. In 2018, the third annual Walter Award for Outstanding Literature in Children’s Literature expands to two categories: Teen (ages 13-18) and Younger Readers (ages 9-13). One Walter Award Winner and one or two Walter Honorees will be announced in each of the two categories.
